Marvin Ridge (10-2 & 6-1) will need to rebuild their offense for the 2018 season. The Mavericks graduate QB Bryce McLain (1516 passing yds & 20 TDs & 1004 rushing yards), RB Caleb Deveaux (856 yds/13 TDs) and Devin Powell (595 receiving yds & 6 TDs). The quarterback position most likely will be filled by rising senior Jake Cameron — the only quarterback on the roster with varsity experience, would take the reigns, but as spring practices have wrapped up, Cameron is in a position battle with two others for the starting spot. Senior Matthew Wunder and sophomore Sully McDermott. Wunder spent the entire 2017 season behind McClain and Cameron as the team’s No. 3 quarterback. The Mavericks offense will return senior WR Sean Brown and RB Caleb Woodley. Brown was tied with Devin Powell with 42 receptions and racked up 536 yards and a team lead 8 receiving scores last season. Woodley, a senior played in 10 games last season, racking up 567 yards on the ground and 5 touchdowns. Senior Carson Cross had 4 receptions for 61 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Maverick defense will be anchored by three seniors in linebacker Will Smith, defensive back Carson Cross and defensive end Jonathan Clark. Smith led the Mavs with 103 tackles (75 solo) in 2017. Senior defensive end Jonathan Clark returns after leading the Maverick defense with 7 sacks in 2017. Carson Cross was 1st team All-UCHSF after grabbing 7 interceptions and leading Union Co. in that category. Senior Marcus Robitaille finished 3rd on the Mavs with 49 tackles and is the main kick-off/punt returner. Robitaille racked up 115 returns yards and a TD, the Mavs lone special teams score in 2017. Senior Jason Stricker returns for the Mavs kicking duties. Stricker was 12-of-14 on PAT’s and 6-of-7 on field goals in 2018. Stickers longest field goal was a 51-yarder. The Mavericks open the season on August 17th at South Meck.
