Monroe Redhawks

The Monroe Redhawks (16-0, 5-0) will be defending their 2A State title in 2016. Senior QB Zephaniah Wall will be at the helm for Coach Sowell. Wall will be a 4-year starter and is climbing he way up the Union Co. record book. Wall has thrown for 6149 career yards (3rd All-time) and has 70-career passing TDs (3rd All-time). Wall threw for 3507 yards and 44 TDs as a junior. Wall will be without Braxton Knotts, who graduated and took his 1375 rushing yards with him. Junior McKinley Nelson returns after 746 yards and 4 TDs in 2015. Wall ran for 630 and 10 TDs. The Redhawk’s passing game will have Wall looking to hook up with senior receiver Jadarius McManus after putting up 1209 receiving yards and 11 TDs. Coach Sowell will be looking for underclassman to step up to take the double teams away from McManus.

Defensively the Redhawks lose their top 3 tacklers from 2015 but return Jaqwan Coffie, Miquillen Bryant and Deandre Staton. All 3 had over 100 tackles each in 2015. Bryant was a beast as an end-rusher setting a school record for sacks with 16.5. Station had 10 sacks in 2015. The Redhawks will feel the loss in the defensive backfield with Desmon Robinson and Melvin Bonilla graduating and taking their combined 19 INTs with them. Senior kicker Brayan Diaz returns after scoring 130 points in 2015. Diaz has given Monroe a real threat in the kicking game and no longer always going for the 2-point conversion. Diaz knocked down 14 field goals and connected on 88 or 91 XP attempts. The Redhawks will defend their 2015 state title by hosting Sun Valley on August 19th.
