Monroe (5-7 & 2-5) lose McKinley Nelson and his 1267 yards and 15 TDs. Senior QB Trey Shepherd returns after putting up 1655 yards passing while completing 59% of his passes. Shepherd threw 17 TDs in 2017. JahTwan Stafford is the leading rusher that is returning after putting up 352 yards and 4 TDs in 2017. Shepherd’s main target should have been Traevon Kenion. Kenion, a South Carolina commit, will not play for the RedHawks in 2018, instead joining Heritage High in Wake Forest for the 2018 season. JahTwan is the leading receiver returning with 16 receptions for 195 yards and 1 TD. Monroe will look to a 6-foot-2, 180-pound freshman Shaleak “Punch” Knotts. Knotts is expected to start as a freshman and is the younger brother of Braxton Knotts who was the 2015 UCHSF.com’s Offensive Player of the Year.
The RedHawk defense returns its top 5 of 7 tacklers including their top 2 tacklers in Elijah Bost (82 tackles) and Chris Colon. Devin Covington is the leading sacker for the RedHawks after recording 3 sacks in 2017. The RedHawks recorded 8 interceptions as a team in 2017, 4 of them are from guys that will be back for 2018. Omar Webb, Deuce Wilson, Javon Robinson and Salen Streater each had 1 interception in 2017. Junior Chris Andon was 26-of-33 on PATs in 2017. The RedHawks did not attempt a field-goal in 2017.
