    The Cougars continue to struggle after a 66-0 loss to Forest Hills. Central Academy is 0-10 on the season and 0-4 in the Rocky River Conference. The Cougars will be at East Montgomery Friday Nov. 3rd.

      Cougars shut out again

      The Cougars continue to struggle after a 59-8 loss to Anson Co. Anson jumped out to a 41-0 lead to start the game in the Bearcats’ first road win of the season. Central Academy scored its second touchdown of the season and first since week 3 on senior Bryson Miller’s kickoff return late in the third quar ter. Central Academy is 0-9 on the season and 0-3 in the Rocky River Conference. The Cougars will be at Forest Hills Friday Oct. 27th.

      The Cougars continue to struggle after a 60-0 loss to West Stanly. The Colts broke a three-game losing streak. CATA is now 0-8 overall and was shut out for the seventh time this season. CATA will host Anson Co. in Week 10.

                  Cougars fall again, this time to Yellow Jackets

                  The Yellow Jackets jumped out early on the Cougars and never looked back on their way to a 41-13 win. The Cougars turned the ball over 6 times in the loss. Central Academy senior Devin McCarthy had 81 yards rushing with a touchdown while junior Sam Jackson added 68 rushing yards and a touchdown. Senior Elijah Wynn added 59 yards receiving. The Cougars defense got nine tackles from senior Dan Ryan and sophomore Jacob Morin while junior Connor Hollenbeck had two takeaways with an interception and a fumble recovery. The Cougars will host Parkwood Friday Nov. 4th.

                    Cougars are shut out for 4th time in 5 weeks

                    Mount Pleasant improved to 2-1 in the Rocky River Conference with a home win over CATA. The Tigers jumped out to a 35-0 lead before extending that to 56-0 at halftime. On the night, CATA was held to just 12 yards of total offense. The Cougars fall to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the RRC. They look to snap a seven game losing streak Friday when they travel to Forest Hills.

                      Cougars fall to Colts 51-0

                      Central Academy fell 51-0 at home to West Stanly. The Colts jumped out early and never looked back. The past three seasons the Colts had only two shut-outs combined. The Cougars were held to 34 total yards of offense on the night. Central Academy has now lost six straight. The Cougars will travle to Mt. Pleasant Friday Oct. 21st.

                            Cougars fall to Thomas Jefferson HS

                            Thomas Jefferson Academy scored early and ofton on their way to a 40-12 win. The lead was extended to 33-6 at the half with finally Central Academy falling to 1-4 overall. Senior Devon McCarthy, who made his first career start at quarterback for CATA, threw for 100 yards and a touchdown while rushing 18 times for 128 yards. Senior Earl Styne scored the Cougars’ other touchdown on a 16-yard run. Elijah Wynn, a senior, led CATA with four catches for 42 yards and a score. Central Academy hosts Piedmont on Friday Sept. 23rd.

                              Cougars fall to Metrolina 33-7

                              Metrolina Christian cruised to a 33-7 win over Central Academy holding the Cougars to 17 yards of offense. Central Academy lost starting quarterback Clemson Allen in the first half. CATA recorded just four first downs, all in the second half. The Cougars had just two offensive possessions before finding themselves down 19-0 on three Metrolina rst quarter touchdowns. The Cougars were able to get on the scoreboard late in the fourth on a Earl Styne fumble recovery and then carried the ball as a running back for a 3-yard score. Central Academy hosts Thomas Jefferson Academy on Friday.

                                Union Academy scored 21 unanswered points to defeat their rival Central Academy 21-13 and pick up its first win of the season. Central Academy took a 13-0 lead behind Clemson Allens two touchdown passes to Devon McCarthy.

                                  Cougars bounce back

                                  Central Academy won its home opener against Highland Tech 49-0. The Cougars jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead. The 49 points are the second most points scored in school history.CATA senior QB Clemson Allen had a hand in all 7 TDs. Allen had two rushing touchdowns while throwing for 185 yards and five TDs. Union Co. record for passing TDs in a game is six. Junior Sam Jackson rushed for 78 yards while senior Elijah Wynn (55 receiving yards) and juniors Connor Hollenbeck (46 receiving yards) and Kevin Maxwell (36 receiving yards) each had a receiving touchdown. Senior Devon McCarthy (44 yards) pulled down two touchdowns. Defensively, Central Academy had four interceptions. Central Academy takes on Union Academy Friday Sept. 2nd.

                                    Cougars open 2016 with a loss

                                    Central Academy got on the board first when senior QB Clemson Allen found the end zone then gave up 28 points and falling to Mt. Island Charter 35-9 in week one. Mountain Island Charter tied the game up, CATA’s defense forced a safety to take their last lead at 9-7. Mount Island Charter reeled off 28 straight points the rest of the way. Allen nished with 15 carries for 75 yards. Junior Sam Jackson rushed 18 times for 101 yards while pulling in seven catches for 74 yards. Defensively, senior Daniel Ryan had 13 tackles including a sack and an interception. Central Academy has its home opener next week against Highland Tech.

                                      Cougars season ends.

                                      Central Academy opened the season with 4 staright wins and the best start in school history but lost 6 games in a row and ended the season on a 66-13 loss to Parkwood. The Cougars got off to a strong start behind their QB Clemson Allen, who had a 39-yard run on the opening drive. Allen r ushed four times for 60 yards on CATA’s first drive. Senior tailback Jack Heda opened the scoring on a 1-yard TD to cap off the Cougar drive. The CATA defense then gave up 28 staright points to go down 43-13 at the half. Allen was sacked and knocked out of the game on the last play of the first half. He rushed for 142 yards on 15 carries and a TD.

                                        Cougars no match for Yellow Jackets.

                                        Central Academy could not stop the Forest Hills offense and took a 57-20 loss. After Forest Hills when up 15-0, the Cougars stayed in the game with a 13-play, 66-yard drive that was capped by a Clemson Allen one-yard plunge to make it 15-7 but the Yellow Jackets answered immediatley with a 68-yard kick-off return by Tre'yon Grace. The Cougars found a last glimmer of hope when Allen found a receiver Devon McCarthy for 38 yards and a touchdown. Central Academy reached the end zone one more time when running back Jack Heda (134 yards on 23 carries) scored from two yards out to close the game. CATA will be at Parkwood on Friday Nov. 6th.

                                          Cougars fall to Tigers

                                          Mount Pleasant scored 41 unanswered points on the road and handed Central Academy its fourth straight loss. Jack Heda had a 56 yard run inside the 10 yard line before junior Clemson Allen punched it in to tie the game up at seven halfway through the first quarter. Heda rushed for 153 yards on 15 carries while also recording 11 tackles on defense. Allen had 63 rushing yards to go with two r ushing touchdowns. Junior Drew Gentry threw his first career touchdown to Allen on an 18 yard fade pass. Central Academy is now 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the RRC. CATA wil host Forest Hills on Friday.

                                            Cougars can't hold on to lead

                                            West Stanly scored 14 unanswered points, including the game winning touchdown with less than one minute left to go in a win over visiting Cougars. Central Academy got on the board first on a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Senior Jack Heda scored on a to give his team a 13-0 lead in the third quarter. The Cougars (4-3 overall, 0-2 Rocky River Conference) took a 13-7 lead into the fourth quarter. After winning four in a row, the Cougars have now lost three straight and look to get back on the winning track on Friday. The Cougars will host Mount Pleasant Friday Oct 23rd.

                                                  Central Academy scored 20 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to pull out a 26-7 road win over Northside Christian Academy. The 4-0 Cougars are off the the best start in school history have held opponents to just 4.3 points per game. Cougars junior QB Clemson Allen rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries in the win over NS Christian. The bye week comes at a perfect time for Central Academy. Senior Jack Heda has missed the past 2 games with a hamsting injury looks to get healthy after rushing or 291 yards this season. CATA will travel to Piedmont Friday Sept. 25th

                                                    Cougars best start ever!

                                                    Central Academy’s football program is off to a 3-0 start for the first time in the school’s nine-year history. The Cougars achieved the milestone with a 29-6 home win over archrival Union Academy on Friday. Senior Deyton Cook, senior Brandon Hayes and junior quarterback Clemson Allen all ran for touchdowns for the Cougars, who racked up 275 yards on the ground. Allen also connected with junior receiver Jesse Ballew for a 32-yard touchdown on CATA’s first play from scrimmage before the delay. Allen, a second-year starter, has accounted for 11 touchdowns in three games. He’s run for six and thrown five more. Cook led the r ushing attack with 11 carries for 98 yards. Hayes added 56 yards while Allen ran for 34. The Cougars played without leading r usher Jack Heda, who was held out with a hamstring injur y. Heda r ushed for a com- bined 291 yards in the first two games. The Cougars look to go 4- adn will be on the road at North Side Chrstian Friday Sep 11.

                                                      Cougars best start ever!

                                                      CATA's new coach is now 2-0 after a 49-0 win over Highland Tech Friday night. It is the first 2-0 start in the pro- gram’s 11 year history. Junior QB Clemson Allen did a little of everything offensively — he had a hand in all seven touchdowns. The Cougars rushed for 278 yards, led by Allen, who had 102 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Senor Jack Heda had 73 yards rushing while junior Cameron Forbis added 61 yards rushing. Allen also threw for 121 yards and four touchdowns. Senior Nick Roets had 52 yards receiving and two touchdowns while seniors Christian Mckeown had 44 yards receiving along with Garrett Richardson each had a TD catch. Central Academy will host rival Union Academy Friday September 4th.

                                                        Cougars give New Coach a week 1 win!!

                                                        Trailing 12-6 at the half, first year coach Shane Griffin made an adjustment that might have been the dif ference in the game. Jack Heda was the stud of the offense. Heda rushed for 218 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Junior QB Clemson Allen added two touchdowns and 11 carries for 55 yards. Griffin was officially hired just 17 days before the first game. Central Academy is at Highland Tech Friday August 28th.

                                                          Cougars end season on heartbreaker.

                                                          The 2014 Season came down to the last game of the season and the winner advancing to the playoffs. It did not end well for the Cougars, losing to Parkwood 19-18. Central Academy took a 12-0 lead before with Parkwood answering but the Cougars answered right back when Quay Threatt scored his second touchdown of the night, this time on a 74 yard reception that put his team up 18-7 at the half. Central Academy held the Rebels’ running game to 46 yards on 33 carries. Along with Threatt’s two touchdowns, senior Deshawn Morrison also scored for the Cougars. The Cougars end the season 4-7 overall and recorded four shutouts for 1st year coach Phil Smith. The future looks bright for the Cougars in 2015.

                                                            Cougars fall to Yellow Jackets 42-28

                                                            The Cougars had no answer for Forest Hills' CJ Carelock as he ran fro 264 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-28 loss. Forest Hills’ seemingly-comfortable 19-point lead wasn’t enough as the Cougars fighting for their playoff lives, reeled off 22 points in a row to take a 28-27 lead. The Cougars started working their way back from the 21-point deficit with senior wide receiver Quay Threatt getting behind the Yellow Jacket defense for a 45-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Clemson Allen. A Forest Hills drive stalled in Cougars’ territory, setting up a 38-yard field goal attempt. The kick was low and went directly into the line of scrimmage, where it bounced into the hands of Cougar defensive end Naim Donaldson, who returned the block 66 yards for a touchdown. The Cougars got eight points out of it when Threatt caught the two- point try, cutting the Yellow Jacket lead to 27-20. Central Academy kicker Bernard Gomez recovered his ensuing onside kick. Seven plays later, Threatt caught his third touchdown pass of the game, this time from 21 yards out. Threatt finished with four catches for 139 yards. Deshawn Morrison put the Cougars on top for the first and only time with a run around the left side for two points and a 28-27 lead. The Cougars were only able to pick up one first down the rest of the way. The Cougars were held scoreless in the 4th quarter. Central Academy will host Parkwood on Friday.

                                                              Cougars make it close but fall to Tigers.

                                                              Mount Pleasant scored 21 unanswered points in the first quarter and hung on as Central Academy fell just short in Rocky River Conference action. After falling behind by three touchdowns, the Cougars got within a touchdown by scoring two touchdowns late in the first half. Sophomore quarterback Clemson Allen found junior Jack Heda and senior Deshawn Morrison to pull CATA within 21-14. Mount Pleasant scored with seven seconds left in the half to extend their lead to 28-14 at the break. Central Academy trailed by three TDs again but responded, this time behind Morrison. Morrison completed an 11-yard TD pass to Quay Threatt and then rushed for an eight yard TD to cut it to 35-28. The Tigers scored the insurance touchdown with just over two minutes left to go in the game. Heda had a game high 197 yards on the ground to go with 56 yards receiving. Morrison rushed for 68 yards, had 25 yards receiving, and 51 yards passing while also rushing, catching, and throwing for a touchdown. He also had a team high 16 tackles on defense for Central Academy. The Cougars are now 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky River Conference.

                                                                Cougars hammer West Stanly 39-0

                                                                Led by a strong defense, Central Academy snapped a 10-game conference losing streak with a convincing 39-0 home win over West Stanly on Friday. The Cougars are now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the Rocky River Conference, and already have one more win than last year's team. CATA's defense has a school-record four shutouts, and has outscored its opponents a combined 127-0 in the four wins. Central Academy not only leads the county in shutouts, but has as many as the rest of the county combined (one each for Union Academy, Weddington, Piedmont, Monroe) Central Academy scored again in the first quarter, this time off a bad snap by West Stanly. Senior Naim Donaldson made the recovery for touchdown, giving his team a 14-0 lead. Central Academy led 26-0 at the break. CATA's defense forced five turnovers and finished with three fumble recoveries, three sacks and two interceptions. On the first play of the second half junior Jack Heda scored on a 66 yard run to extend the lead. Heda finished with 133 yards and three TDs on 11 carries. Senior Deshawn Morrison had nine carries for 86 yards and and had a team-high 14 tackles playing linebacker. Senior Quay Threatt made the most out of his one catch, scoring on a 55 yard pass from sophomore Clemson Allen. Central Academy is in a four-way tie for second place in the Rocky River Conference. The Cougars travel to first place Mount Pleasant on Friday.

                                                                  Cougars come up short against Monroe

                                                                  The Monroe Redhawks had to count on the defense when they opened their defense of the Rocky River Conference championship with a rocky 16-10 victory over Central Academy on Friday. The Redhawks (4-3, 1-0 RRC) ended a three-game skid but it wasn’t in the impressive fashion they were wanting for homecoming. Monroe beat CATA 44-14 last season, and this is the first time in the history of the series the Cougars had a chance to pull out a win in the fourth quarter. Central Academy (3-4, 0-1 RRC) scored 10 points in a span of 4:02 in the fourth quarter. The Cougars got on the board when Monroe’s long snapper hiked the ball over the punter’s head and through the end zone for a safety. CATA reached the end zone soon after on Jack Heda’s 59-yard touchdown run. QB Clemson Allen passed to Quay Threatt for the two-point conversion with 3:47 left, pulling the Cougars to within 16-10. The Cougars got the ball back with 2:19 left but after picking up a first down the Redhawks’ defense stopped Heda just a couple of chain links short of the first down on fourth and two, sealing the victory.

                                                                    Cougars fall short to Panthers 23-14.

                                                                    The Piedmont Panthers halted a two-game losing streak with a 23-14 victor y over Central Academy on Friday night. Aaron Braswell gave the Panthers (2-3) a cushion when he took a handoff up the mid- dle, cut to the left sideline and turned it into a 58-yard touch- down. The ensuing two-point con- version, a pass from Cameron Tripp to Cody Leviner, gave the Panthers a 20-8 lead with 11:48 left in the fourth quarter. The Cougars cut the lead down to four when r unning back Deshawn Morrison evaded a tackle on the side- line and out ran the Panther defense 49 yards for a touchdown with 4:17 left in the third. Morrison gained 105 yards on five carries. Tyler Scott set up Bras- well’s touchdown with a fum- ble recover y with seven sec- onds left in the third quarter. Piedmont is now 2-3 while CATA dropped to 3-3.

                                                                      Cougars shut out S. Stanly 38-0

                                                                      Junior running back Jack Heda ran for 106 yards and two touch- downs on 10 carries to help Central Academy cruise to a 38-0 road win over South Stanly. The Cougars improved to 3-2 overall, while the Rebel Bulls dropped to 0-4. Heda’s touchdown runs covered 10 and 60 yards. His 60-yard scoring scamper gave the Cougars a 22-0 advantage at the 8:44 mark of the third quarter. CATA led just 8-0 at the half before scoring 22 in the third to break the game open. Senior Langston Smith added a one-yard TD run in the second half, while senior Michael Anderson found the end zone from 30 yards out late in the fourth. CATA’s lone score through the air came in the first quarter when senior DeShawn Morrison connected with senior receiver Quay Thre- att on a 57-yard pass. Central Academy plays at Piedmont on Friday in its final non conference game of the season.

                                                                        Cougars fall to Metrolina 27-12

                                                                        Metrolina's Logan Shumate caught a touchdown pass, threw for another and returned a punt for a third score to lead Metrolina Christian Academy to a 27-12 road win over Central Academy. on Friday night. The loss ended a two-game winning streak for the Cougars (2-2) that included back-to-back shutouts. The Cougars battled back to tie the game when Deshawn Morri- son broke of f a 15-yard run. Central Academy’s defense made a stand and Morrison, who would finish with 141 yards on 16 carries, found the endzone for a second time from five yards out to cut the deficit to two after another failed two- point conversion. Central Academy scored both times they entered Metrolina territory in the first half, but came up empty the two times they crossed midfield after the break. Metrolina out- gained CATA 272-240 on offense. Morrison led Central with 141 yards and two touchdowns on 16 r ushing attempts. The Cougars host winless South Stanly in Week 5.

                                                                          Cougars knock off Union Academy

                                                                          Central Academy has a winning record three games into the season for the first time since 2011. The Cougars (2-1) snapped a two-game los- ing streak to their archri- val Union Academy with Friday’s 20-0 road win. The Cougars racked up 216 yards on the ground behind the legs of Jack Heda (77 yards), Sergio Gomez (63 yards), and DeShawn Morrison (61 yards). Heda scored on an 81 yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Quay Threatt caught two touchdown passes from Clemson Allen and finished with 74 yards receiving. The Cougars’ defense was a bright spot, earning the program’s first shutout for either team in this series since they star ted playing each other six years ago. The Cougars will try to win back-to-back games for the fourth time in school histor y when they will host Metrolina Christian Academy on Friday.

                                                                              Central Academy QB Clemson Allen threw for four touchdowns in the first quar ter to lead Central Academy to a 30-0 home victory over Highland Tech on Friday. The Cougars improved to 1-1 on the year, while the Rams fell to 0-1. Allen, a sophomore, finished 5-of- 5 for 58 yards and four scores. He connected with senior receiver Sergio Gomez for two TDs, while senior DeShawn Morrison and junior Nick Roets each hauled in one touchdown catch. Jack Heda, a junior tailback, led Central Academy with 88 ushing yards on just five carries. CATA, which is under the direction of first-year coach Scott Smith, plays at Union Academy on Friday.

                                                                                Central Academy came up just short in the season debut. The Cougars got on the board first behind a DeShawn Morrison touch- down run to take an 8-0 lead. Jack Heda also scored in the first quarter to give Central Academy a 14-0 lead. After trailing 22-14 at the break, Nor th Stanly outscored the visitors 12-2 in the decisive second half. Central Academy got a safety late on a botched punt. Morrison finished with 189 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. The Cougars gained 309 yards on the ground as a team. Defensively, Christian Cole- man and Evan Whiteside had sacks for CATA. Central Academy will take on Highland Tech at home on Friday.

                                                                                  Phil Smith named Head Coach for Cougars

                                                                                  The C.A.T.A. Cougars announced last week that Phil Smith has been hired as the new football coach, replacing Tad Baucom who accepted the head coaching position at Sun Valley after three seasons as the Cougars coach. Smith, whose previous coaching stints include head coaching positions at Parkwood and North Stanly, along with assistant positions at Sun Valley, West Iredell, Richmond County, Southern Alamance, Southeast Guilford and JF Webb,
