    Mavericks season ends on 27-14 loss

    Mount Tabor eliminated Marvin Ridge in the first round of the 3AA playoffs. Tabor jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half before the Mavericks scored in the third quarter when sophomore quarterback Sully McDermott connected with Sean Brown in the end zone to cut the lead to 14-7. The Spartans put the game away with two straight touchdowns to extend their lead to 27-7. McDermott threw another touchdown, this time to junior Aidan Twombly, but could get no closer than 13 points. Mount Tabor, which went undefeated in the Piedmont Triad Conference and earned a No. 3 seed, improved to 8-4 overall. Mount will host Asheville Erwin in the second round. Marvin Ridge, seeded 14th, completed the season with a 6-6 record.

      Mavs fall short vs. Sun Valley 24-17

      In a game that ended closer than the statline suggests, Marvin Ridge came up a little short falling to Sun Valley 24-17 in the final regular season game for both teams. Despite being outgained, 454-282, on the night, the Mavericks (6-5, 3-4 SCC) had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds. With Sun Valley leading to 24-10 the Mavericks fist play of its next possession, sophomore receiver Ian Hutter tipped a jump ball from quarterback Matthew Wunder to himself and raced 67 yards for the touchdown. The Mavericks recovered the ensuing onside kick and made it down to the Sun Valley 29-yard line, but Wunder’s throw to the end zone in the closing moments fell incomplete. The Mavericks defense sacked Howell five times on the night, including once on 4th-and goal at the Mavericks’ 4-yard line. Sully McDermott caught a pass from Sean Brown on a flee-flicker for the Mavericks 1st TD of the night. Matthew Wunder was 10-of-15 for 180 yards and a TD. The Maverick rushing attack was held to just 62 yards on 21 carries. Marvin Ridge falls to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the SCC. The Mavericks will travel to Mt. Tabor Friday Nov. 16th

        Mavs falls to Charlotte Catholic 39-24

        Marvin Ridge lost to Charlotte Catholic 39-24 on Friday sealing the deal for the Cougars to win the Southern Carolina Conference outright. It is the ninth straight conference title for the Cougars and the 16th in the last 17 seasons. Marvin Ridge senior Marcus Robitaille took the opening kickoff back 98 yards for the score and the early 7-0 lead. It was only the third time all season Catholic has trailed in a game. The Cougars would score 18 straight points before Marvin Ridge senior kicker Jason Stricker tacked on a 22-yard field goal to cut the lead to 18-10. Catholic added a touchdown right before half to lead 25-10 at the break. The Mavericks scored the only points of the third quar ter, as sophomore quarterback Sully McDermott found Robitaille for his second score of the night to get within eight points. Catholic answered with 14 unanswered points to stop any comeback attempt. Sophomore Ian Hutter scored the last touchdown of the night for the Mavericks. The 24 points were the most given up by the Cougars all season. Charlotte Catholic has now won 10 straight and finishes the regular season 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the SCC. Marvin Ridge falls to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the SCC. The Mavericks will host Sun Valley Friday Nov. 9th

          Mavs fall to Warriors 45-7

          Marvin Ridge had the The top scoring offense (34.3) and defense (12.3) in the SCC entering the game with rival Weddington.Marvin Ridge (6-3, 3-2 SCC) was bested in all three phases Friday night. The Mavericks were outgained 510-113, on the night and shutout the Mavs’ offense for the first time this season. Marvin Ridge would score its only touchdown on a 35-yard interception return by Carson Cross midway through the second quarter. Weddington immediately responded, however, driving 80 yards in just five plays and reaching the end zone on an eight-yard touchdown run by Warriors. The Warrior defense held Marvin Ridge quarterbacks Jake Cameron and Matthew Wunder to a combined 5-of- 20 passing for 50 yards. The duo came into the game completing a combined 160-of-230 (69.6 percent) of its passes on the season. The Mavericks will host Sun Valley Friday Oct. 26th

            Mavs shutout Cavs 38-0

            Marvin Ridge High scored 38 unanswered points, 28 in the first half on their way to a 38-0 SCC win over Cuthbertson. The win gives the Mavericks (6-2 overall, 3-1 in SCC) four shutouts for the 2018 campaign, breaking a school record dating back to their 2009 football season (three). Senior QB Jake Cameron was 17-of-20 for 319 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Marvin Ridge sophomore Ian Hutter caught eight passes for 195 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Sean Brown had a big night as well, catching seven passes for 102 yards and a score. Brown has 11 TD catches in eight games. Steven Gonzalez rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Woodley added a 2-yard TD run adn 15 yards rushing. Marvin Ridge kicker Jason Stricker added a field goal from 38 yards for the final Maverick points. The Mavericks will travel to Weddington to take on their long-time rival Friday Oct. 19th

              Mavs shutout Rebles 42-0

              Leading, 20-12, with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter, the Mavericks (4-2, 1-1 SCC) opted to attempt a 45-yard field goal that would have put them up by two scores with a little more than a quarter to play. Instead, Monroe linebacker Chris Colon blocked the Jason Stricker kick, which fell right into the hands of sophomore Jordan Black — who returned the ball 75 yards for the score. One successful two-point conversion later, and the Redhawks (4-2, 1-1 SCC) had tied the game at 20-20.Senior Jake Cameron got the start at quarterback for Marvin Ridge, but left the game in the second quarter and didn’t return. Fellow senior Matthew Wunder took over in his place and completed 12-of-16 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown — a 55-yard strike to sophomore Ian Hutter that gave the Mavericks a 20-6 lead midway through the third quarter. The Mavericks will host Parkwood Friday Oct. 5th.

                Mavs can't hold on to 14-pt lead, fall to Monroe

                The Maverick stingy defense and senior Steven Gonzalez’s three touchdowns led the Mavs to a 42-0 win over Parkwood. Gonzalez scored on runs of 8 and 10 yards, but the highlight of the night washis 96-yard run that gave his team a 21-0 lead. The Mavericks held a 28-0 lead at the half. Senior Jake Cameron threw for two touchdowns; one to fellow senior Sean Brown and the other to junior tight end Aidan Twombly. It was Brown’s 10th receiving touchdown on the season. Marvin Ridge improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCC, one game behind first place. The Mavericks will host Cuthbertson Friday Oct. 12th

                  Mavs shut out Panthers 42-0

                  The Mavericks scored 42 points in the fi rst half of Friday’s 42-0 road win over Piedmont. In the 12-year history of Marvin Ridge’s football program, this is the first time the Mavericks have ever shut out a conference opponent,Marvin Ridge three game winning streak comes to an end. They held Piedmont to 103 yards of offense and six first downs Caleb Woodley ran for just 26 yards but scored three rushing touchdowns for Marvin Ridge. QB Jake Cameron had a touchdown run and so did Steven Gonzalez, while sophomore QB Sully McDermott threw a touchdown pass to sophomore Ian Hutter. The Mavs will be at Monroe Friday Sept. 28th

                    Mavs fall in OT 43-42

                    After trailing for most of the second half, Marvin Ridge rallied late to tie the game before falling in overtime to Parkland. The Mavericks trailed 20-17 at the half. In the third quarter, Parkland added a field goal for the only points of the quarter to lead 23-17. Late in the fourth quarter, Parkland converted a fourth down and it led to a scored but the extra point was no good, holding the scoreto 35-24. The Mavericks scored late and converted the two point conversion to trail 35-32 with just 36 seconds left in the game. They lined up for the onside kick and recovered it with 31 seconds left.Marvin Ridge senior QB Jake Cameron led his team down to the 10 yards line with just three seconds left before senior Jason Stricker split the uprights to send the game into overtime. The Mavericks got first possession and senior Steven Gonzalez scored to put his team up 42-35. Parkland answered right back and after scoring, decided to go for two — completing a two-point pass for the victory. Cameron retured after missing last week and was 27-of-48 for 274 yards adn 4 TDs. Cameron hooked up with Sean Brown for 9 receptions for 108 yards and 4 Tds. Marvin Ridge three game winning streak comes to an end. The Mavs have a bye on Friday and will be at Piedmont Friday Sept. 21st.

                      Mavs rolls on Knights 28-18

                      Marvin Ridge improved to 3-0 for the second year in a row as they defeated Ardrey Kell, 28-18, on Friday night. The Mavericks got a strong effort from Matthew Wunder, who was starting in place of Jake Cameron, who was injured in last week’s win. The senior quarterback threw for four touchdowns on the night, three of which came in the first half. Wunder would found Ian Hutter from 37 yards out to give his team an early 7-0 lead before finding senior Sean Brown to extend the lead to 14-0. Ardrey Kell would cut the lead to eight, 14-6, before Wunder found senior Caleb Woodley for a score to give his team a 21-6 advantage. The Mavericks would lead 21-12 at the half. In the second half, Brown would score his second touchdown of the night from Wunder, this time from 25 yards out, to push the lead to 28-12. Brown now has five receiving touchdowns on the season. Marvin Ridge, who has not lost a road game since November 2016, will play their next three games away from home starting on Friday Sept 7th when they travel to face Parkland.

                        Mavs shutout Wonders 24-0

                        Marvin Ridge scored all 24 points in the first half, getting three touchdown runs from Caleb Woodley and a shutout from the defense. The Mavericks outscored Brown 21-0 in the fi rst quarter, with all three touchdowns coming from Woodley. The senior running back capped off drives Marvin Ridge with touchdown runs of 12, 1, and 10 yards. Kicker Jason Stricker, a Liberty commit, made a 44 yard field goal in the second quarter to give his team a 24-0 lead. After giving up nine points last week, the Marvin Ridge defense is now allowing 4.5 points per game this season. The Wonders put up 54 points in last week’s win, but were shut out on Friday in Marvin for the first time since October 2013. Late in the fourth quarter, the Wonders had a fourth and goal but seniors Jonathan Clark and Brae Lein took down the quarterback to preserve the shutout. Marvin Ridge hosts Ardrey Kell Friday Aug 31st.

                          Mavs open 2018 with 37-9 win

                          Marvin Ridge got big contributions from their seniors on their way to a 28-point road win over South Meck. Senior quarterback Jake Cameron threw for three touchdowns, all to senior wide out Sean Brown. They connected twice in the first half, from 20 yards and five yards out, helping the Mavericks lead 24-0 at the breakThe Mavericks scored 24 unanswered points to open the game up. Mavericks senior kicker Jason Stricker connected on a 25 yard field goal to give his team a 17-0 first quarter lead. The third touchdown from Cameron to Brown was from 41 yards out in the third quarter. Senior Caleb Woodley scored the final touchdown from three yards out in the fourth. Marvin Ridge hosts A.L.Brown in Week 2.
