    Warriors roll over S. Iredell

    Continuing its streak of dominant play, the Weddington High football team routed Central Cabarrus, 48-0, at home Friday night in the first round of the 3AA state playoffs. The Warriors (11-1), who gave up 142 yards of total of fense against the Vikings (8-4), have now outscored their last six opponents by a total of 223 points, 279-56, since their lone loss of the season to Charlotte Catholic on Sep. 28. Things went wrong in a hurry for Central Cabarrus, as two botched snaps on punts gave Weddington the ball inside the Vikings’ 10-yard line on back-to-back possessions to open the game. The Warriors capitalized on the short field position with two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Whitner Litton to senior receiver Max Brimigion to take the quick 14-0 advantage. After Litton threw two more touchdown passes on back-to-back possessions to Will Shipley and Eamon Murphy to push the lead to 28-0, it was time for the other two phases of the game to carry the scoring load. After Weddington forced a three-andout on Central Cabarrus’ ensuing possession, senior James Shipley returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown. Three plays later, Trey Alsbrooks intercepted the Vikings’ quarterback and took it back 15 yards for another score. Next up for Weddington is a trip to Statesville, where the Warriors will take on No. 4 seed South Iredell next Friday in the second round of the 3AA state playoffs.

      Warriors Litton throws 4 TDs in win

        Warriors Litton and Birmigion too much for Cavs

        The Weddington Warriors offense exploded in the second half of a 44-21 road win over Cuthbertson. After holding a 10-7 advantage at the break, the Warriors outscored the Cavaliers 20-0 in the third quarter and added two more touchdowns in the first three minutes of the fourth to pull away. Weddington's Max Brimigion Brimigion had his best game of the season. He finished with nine catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns, including a 56-yarder from senior QB Whitner Litton to get the Warriors on the board and a 30-yarder in the opening drive of the second half. Over his last three games, Brimigion has a combined 20 receptions for 435 yards and five scores. Litton finished 18-of-32 for 272 yards with two TDs and no interceptions. The Warriors also rushed for 161 yards. Sophomore tailback Will Shipley had 98 yards and two scores on 11 carries, including a highlight reel 50-yard TD run midway through the third. Weddington’s defense forced four turnovers, including a pair of interceptions by junior safety Colby Barsz. Senior Aiden Brosterhous also had an interception in the win. The Warriors will host a 1st-round playoff game Friday Nov. 16

          Warriors score all kind of ways in 51-14 win

          The Weddington Warriors didn't let turning the ball over on each of its first two offensive possessions, the Warriors were able to regroup and never looked back in a dominant 51-14 win over Monroe. The Warriors started slow, turning the ball over twice with their first six plays from scrimmage. Senior quarterback Whitner Litton completed 11-of-19 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to senior receiver Max Brimigion, who hauled in five passes for 130 yards on the night — eclipsing the 100-yard mark for the second time in as many weeks. Other seniors who scored included receiver Chazton Jordan, on a 54-yard pass from Litton; runningback Wayne Dixie, who caught a nine-yard pass from sophomore Dante Casciola; and James Shipley, who caught a one-yard touchdown pass from his brother, Will Shipley, to give the Warriors a 38-0 lead heading into halftime. The Warrior defense forced three tur novers on the night, including a strip-sack by Joe Zovistoski that was recovered by Trevor McGee and returned 11 yards for a touchdown late in the first half. Weddington followed that up by forcing a fumble by Monroe. The Warriors will travel 5-minutes to Cuthebrtson Friday Nov. 2nd.

            Warriors roll over Mavs 45-7

            The Weddington Warriors made a statement in their 45-7 dominating win over rival Marvin Ridge. Weddington completely dominated the Mavericks in the win. The top scoring offense (34.3) and defense (12.3) in the SCC coming into the game, Marvin Ridge (6-3, 3-2 SCC) was bested in all three phases Friday night. The Warriors (8-1, 4-1) outgained the Mavericks, 510- 113, on the night and shutout the Mavs’ offense for the first time this season. With the Warriors leading 21-0 in the second quarter, Weddington threw the knockout punch to the Mavericks with a blocked punt recovered in the endzone junior Trey Alsbrooks for the Warriors’ fourth touchdown of the night. Leading the way offensively for the Warriors was sophomore running back Will Shipley, who carried the ball a season-high 21 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Will’s brother, senior James Shipley, also scored on a 41-yard screen pass in the second quarter. Weddington senior quarterback Whitner Litton completed 17-of-25 passes for 284 yards, one touchdown and one interception. senior receiver Max Brimigion, who caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. The Warriors host Monroe Friday Oct. 26th.

              Warriors shut out Rebles 49-0

              The Weddington remain one game back from first place in the Southern Carolina Conference after shutting out Parkwood 49-0. It was the first shutout for the Warriors defense this season. Special teams was a key for the Warriors with senior James Shipley returning two punts for TDs. Sophomores Will Shipley and Jackson McClain each scored two rushing touchdowns and senior Wayne Dixie had a rushing score as well. Warrior senior QB Whitner Litton finished the night 9-of-10 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns.Senior WR Max Brimigion caught three passes for 99 yards; Will Shipley and McClain each caught a TD pass. The Warriors host Marvin Ridge Friday Oct. 19th.

                Warriors get back on winning track

                The Weddington Warriors scored 28 unanswered points in the first quarter and rolled to a 42-14 home victory over the Piedmont. Weddington senior quarterback Whitner Litton was 13-of-21 for 224 yards with four touchdown passes and one interception. Weddington senior wide receiver James Shipley hauled in four catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns and also broke out on a 42-yard punt return for a TD. The Shipley brothers combined for the first four touchdowns of the game, including three by James, and it allowed WHS to carry a 28-0 lead into the second quarter. Will, the younger brother of James Shipley, led the Weddington rushing attack with 12 carries and 97 yards, including the 34-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Seniors WR's Max Brimigion and Chazton Jordan each hauled in touchdown catches from Litton. Piedmont junior Connor Purser rushed 20 times for 78 yards and junior Troy Hagin scored for the Panthers on a 4-yard run. The Warriors travel to Parkwood Friday Oct. 12th.

                  Cougars shut out Warriors 20-0

                  Charlotte Catholic's suffocating defense held the Weddington offense to 0 points & 53 total yards offensively in the 20-0 win. Catholic forced five turnovers and held the Warriors to 54 yards of total offense in the win. Weddington recorded just four first downs on the night, including one in the first half, and never reached the red zone. WHS senior quarterback Whitner Litton returned to the sideline after ser ving a three-game suspension for a violation of team rules. He and sophomore Dante Casciola, who went 3-0 as a starter, split time on Friday. Niether quarterback was productive. Casciola fi nished 2-of-6 for 14 yards and two interceptions, while Litton went 6-of-13 for 37 yards and was sacked three times. Senior linebacker Eamon Murphy forced a fumble that was recovered by junior Colby Barsz and later recovered a blocked fi eld goal by senior teammate Max Brimigion. Weddington is allowing just 16.2 points per game on the season. Weddington will host Piedmont Friday Oct. 5th.

                    Warriors stop Howell and Spartans 21-31

                    The Weddington Warriors were bolstered by an inspired defensive performance in the second half, the Warriors handed head coach Andy Capone his first win as a head coach against his former team — a 31-21 victory over Sun Valley. Weddington (5-0, 1-0 SCC) trailed, 21-14, at halftime after Spartans quarterback Sam Howell threw for over 200 yards, rushed for over 100 and accounted for three touchdowns in the fi rst two quarters. After some halftime adjustments, the Warriors held Sun Valley (4-1, 0-1 SCC) to no points and just 48 total yards in the second half. Weddington sacked Howell five times on the night, including three times in the second half. After Weddington tied the game at 21-21 in the third quarter on a 19-yard run by Will Shipley, then forced a threeand- out on Sun Valley’s following possession, the Warriors took the lead for good on a drive that was aided by a few penalties. Facing a 2nd-and-29 on Sun Valley’s 37-yard line, Weddington was bailed out after a roughing the passer penalty handed them an automatic first down. Three plays later, sophomore quarterback Dante Casciola found senior receiver Max Brimigion for a 20-yard touchdown on third-and-10 that put the Warriors ahead for good. Casciola, a sophomore playing in his third varsity game, completed just one pass for eight yards in the first half, but finished the game 10-for-16 for 118 yards and two scores.Casciola’s first touchdown was on a shovel pass to Will Shipley to tie the game in the third quarter. Shipley scored twice on the night, including on a 61-yard run in the second quarter that cut Weddington’s deficit to 21-14. Shipley finished the game with 146 rushing yards on 20 carries and four catches for 25 yards. Weddington will travel to Charlotte Catholic Friday Sept. 28th.

                      Warriors win on Wednesday Night Football

                      Weddington High’s football team earned a marquee win with a 31-21 victory over state powerhouse Crest 31-21. The game was moved up due to the threat of Hurricane Florence. The Warriors improved to 4-0 on the season in what was easily their most competitive game of the year, scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally for the win. After a fourth-down stop near midfield on a tackle for loss by WHS junior Noah Niemeyer, Weddington put together back-to-back TD drives to put the Chargers away. Sophomore QB Dante Casciola made his second straight start at quarteback for the Warriors in place of senior Whitner Litton, who was not on the sideline in Wednesday’s victory. Casciola finished 12-of-21 for 173 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed for a 2-yard TD early in the second quarter. Will Shipley finished with 13 carries for 73 yards and a score, while catching three passes for 48 yards. He also intercepted a tipped pass in Crest territory early in the second quarter to set up Casciola’s TD run. Senior James Shipley led Weddington with four catches for 65 yards, while Dixie added 51 yards on 14 carries — including his game-clinching touchdown. Weddington will travel to rival 4-0 Sun Valley Friday Sept. 21st.

                        Warriors drop 57 on East Meck

                        Weddington scored early and often as they remained undefeated with a 57-7 road win over East Meck. The Warriors open the season with three straight wins. Weddington jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead and pushed the advantage to 42-0 at the half. It was the most points scored in the first half for Weddington since 2016 then they scored 49 points. The Warriors capitalized when sophomore quarterback Dante Casciola found senior James Shipley for the easy score and a 14-0 lead. Casciola struck again, this time finding junior Jackson McClain for the three-touchdown advantage. Will Shipley scored his second touchdown of the quarter to make it 28-0 and the Warriors never looked back on their way to the win. Weddington will host Crest Friday Sept. 14th.

                          Warriors hold Pirates down with 28-12 win

                          After a shaky start, Weddington’s offense was able to take a 14-6 lead at the half thanks to two long touchdown passes by senior quarterback Whitner Litton to The Warriors brothers James and Will Shipley, respectively. All four of the Warriors’ touchdowns on the night came on plays of 30-plus yards. Litton was 13-of-25 for 173 yards and 3 TDs in the win. Will Shipley was finally able to break free on an 67-yard touchdown as time expired in the third quarter to hand Weddington a 16-point lead heading into the game’s final 12 minutes. Will Shipley finished the game with 81 yards rushing and a touchdown on seven carries and caught two passes for 36 yards and a touchdown Weddington will travel to East Meck Friday Sept. 7th.

                            Warriors win 34-16 over Knights to open 2018 season

                            The Warriors, under new HC Andy Capone rolled to a 34-16 road win over Ardrey Kell. It was the first career win for head coach Andy Capone,who replaced Tim Carson. Weddington took a 10-0 lead when Whitner Litton scored on a QB keeper on a 4th-and-goal from the one yard line. Litton threw for 156 yards on the night. Junior kicker Ian Williams converted both his field goals and Weddington would have a 13-3 The Shipley brothers as they both contributed to the 21 unanswered points to open the third quarter that pushed the Warriors lead to 34-3. James Shipley returned the second half kickoff 92 yards for the score which Capone said helped set the tone. Just a few minutes later, Will Shipley took the snap from the Wildcat formation and threw to his older brother James in the end zone to push the lead to 27-3 just two and half minutes into the third quarter. Will rushed for the last touchdown of the night for the Warriors and fi nished with 40 yards on the ground. Williams finished 4-for-4 on extra points to go along with his two field goals in the first half. The Warriors will have an early season bye in Week 2 and host Porter Ridge in Aug 31st.
