The 2016 UnionCountyHighSchoolFootball.com's Defensive Player of the Year is Weddington's Joey Hobbs. Joey helped lead the Weddington Warriors to a 13-3 record, a SCC title and a 3AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. Joey recorded 180 tackles which included 9 tackles for a loss. Hobbs had 8 sacks and 4 interceptions in 2016. He was named All-SCC and The SCC Defensive Player of the Year. Joey recoreded 19 tackles in agame twice (vs. SV and Monroe) Hobbs played some offense as well. Joey had 25 recpeptions for 447 yards and 6 TDs. Joey was named UCHF Player of the Week for Week 7 and part of the Weddington defense that was named POW twice. Joey would go on to play rugby at the US Naval Academy. Congratulations Joey!
